High School Certificate Programs
General Terms
Dual enrollment is the term given to courses in which high school students have the opportunity to earn both high school and college credits simultaneously.
CTE Short-Term Certificate (STC): An undergraduate award signifying the successful completion of a prescribed course of study (9 to 29 semester credit hours) equipping the student with a focused set of skills for an entry-level position in business and industry. CTE Short-term certificates are not designed for transfer to a senior institution.
Certificate (CER): An undergraduate award (less than a degree) signifying the successful completion of a prescribed course of study (30 to 60 semester hours) that provides the student with a specialized set of skills for employment or professional advancement. Certificates are not designed for transfer to a senior institution. All colleges are authorized to award certificates.
There are a wide variety of degrees and certifications. What your student needs after graduation depends on their career path. For example, a lawyer, teacher will need to earn at least a bachelor's degree and then earn certifications and /or licensure in addition to a four-year degree. For this path, a student will need to look into our associate degree programs. However, for a student who is interested in becoming a plumber or cosmetologist, a four-year bachelor's degree is not required. Students interested in career paths such as these would need to consider our Career Tech certifications.
